Montagne-noire From the ruins of the antique Cathar city (destroyed during the crusades) Hautpoul, the inhabitants founded Mazamet at the foot of the Montagne Noire.

Visits : 'La Maison des Mémoires', the medievel village of Hautpoul, 'La Maison du Bois et du Jouet'.

The Black Mountain circuit will lead you, through lakes and forests to Sorrèze ('abbaye-école royale') onto Durfort and its copper fabric, St Ferréol lake and the Canal du Midi water reservoir/supplies.
 
The 'Canal du Midi' is a waterway used in past times for transport and commerce. Built in the XVIIth century by Paul Riquet, to join Toulouse to the mediteranean and the atlantic ocean.

It is today classified as world patrimony by UNESCO.
